Kookaburras thrash Pakistan 6-0 in opening match of men’s international hockey challenge in Hobart
(APP) Blake Govers has scored on debut for Australia’s men’s hockey team in a 6-0 thrashing of Pakistan in the opening match of the men’s Hobart International Challenge.
The younger brother of Kookaburras player Kieran Govers was on target in the 49th minute on Saturday night, beating Pakistan’s goalkeeper Imran Butt to make it a comfortable 4-0.
Flynn Ogilvie added his second goal only five minutes later before Kiel Brown finished off the rout.
Earlier, Jake Whetton got the Kookaburras off to a flying start with a goal in the fourth minute following a nice build-up with fellow forward Glenn Simpson.
Ogilvie then got the last touch on Whetton’s reverse stick shot in the 11th minute to double the lead.
Australia went quiet for the next 25 minutes before Trent Mitton scored to kickstart a strong finish to the game from the home side.
“Making my debut was an amazing experience and I got to top it off with a goal,” said Govers.
Also on Saturday, Australia A defeated South Korea 3-1 thanks to two goals from Justin Douglas and another to Aran Zalewski.
The Kookaburras’ second Test match is against South Korea on Sunday when Australia A also take on Pakistan.
