Carolina Panthers fans are probably hoping that recently-signed tight end Darren Waller can put up the type of numbers that Greg Olsen did during his time with the organization. So perhaps wearing the franchise legend's actual number is a pretty fitting start.
With the initial 53-man roster and practice squad taking shape after this past weekend's cutdown, the Panthers announced new uniform numbers for eight players on Tuesday. Waller was among them, and has decided to turn in No. 35 for No. 88—which Olsen wore from 2011 to 2019.
General manager Dan Morgan, who spoke with reporters this morning, commented on what he believes the 33-year-old Waller can bring to the team.
"I think he has a unique skill set that I think we can utilize," Morgan stated. "I know Coach [Dave] Canales and his staff are really excited about having him and what he can bring to our offense, different dimension to our offense."
On the other side of the ball, linebacker Bobby Okereke, who was officially added yesterday, will wear No. 58. That number, of course, was worn by another beloved Panther in linebacker Thomas Davis—who spent 13 of his 15 NFL campaigns in Carolina.
Here are all eight of the fresh digits, as rolled out today:
- WR Casey Washington: No. 80
- TE Darren Waller: No. 88
- OL Casey Bullock: No. 67
- DL TeRah Edwards: No. 93
- DL Aaron Hall: No. 94
- ILB Mapalo Mwansa: No. 42
- ILB Bobby Okereke: No. 58
- S Zakee Wheatley: No. 20
