George Pickens Defends His Route Tempo as Criticism Over His Effort Grows

The Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens has faced scrutiny when his routes appear less than full speed. Some observers have interpreted those moments as a lack of effort

However, Pickens has responded to criticism over his effort, explaining that fans do not always understand what a receiver’s route is designed to accomplish. Here’s his side of the story.

Pickens said certain routes require receivers to change their speed to maintain timing with the quarterback. He also pointed to defensive schemes as another reason a route may not look as explosive as expected. NFL insider Josh Chambers shares perspectives during the gaffer’s interview with sports news platform, Bleacher Report.

“Every route ain’t ran at 100%. Some routes are ran at certain tempos and times just for you to have timing with the quarterback.”

“Some defenses are playing zone. So that was really all I was saying. You’ve got to kind of look at the film of the game before you critique.”

“If you definitely know the game, then… If you don’t know the game, then I kind of see where you’re coming from.”

Pickens’ comments come as he enters his first season with Dallas after the Cowboys acquired him from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The trade gave the Cowboys another explosive weapon alongside its existing offensive talent. Pickens has consistently shown the ability to create separation and make difficult catches, making his route-running an important part of his new role.

The Cowboys initially sent a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Steelers for Pickens. The Cowboys subsequently received Jones and a 2027 fourth-round pick in the later trade. On the other hand, the Steelers later acquired offensive tackle Broderick Jones from the Cowboys. The moves have created an unusual connection between the two franchises, with each team acquiring a player from the other.

Meanwhile, the Pickens deal has generated significant discussion because of his talent and potential fit in Dallas. His ability to stretch defenses could provide quarterback Dak Prescott with another dangerous option. However, expectations surrounding Pickens also mean his every movement is likely to receive considerable attention.

That scrutiny makes his explanation about route tempo particularly relevant. Receivers do not necessarily run every route at maximum speed. Depending on the concept, a player may throttle down, accelerate at a specific point, or manipulate a defender before making his break. Those details can be difficult to identify without understanding the offensive design. Pickens’ message is therefore straightforward: judging a route solely by how fast it appears on television can create an incomplete picture.

The receiver wants critics to consider the film, defensive coverage, and intended timing before deciding whether a route represents poor effort. As Pickens begins his Dallas tenure, his performance will ultimately determine whether that explanation holds up under greater scrutiny. For now, he is making it clear that not every slower-looking route should be interpreted as a lack of effort. Hopefully, enough fans get his side of the story and, at least, reduce their criticisms of the athlete’s performances.
