Liverpool open talks to sign 6 ft 7 colossus who’s seen as a ‘potential star’ of the future

Liverpool are reportedly targeting a move for a teenage goalkeeper who stands at a hulking two feet tall.

With Alisson Becker turning 34 in a few weeks’ time and now into the final year of his contract, there could be a major changing of the guard between the sticks at Anfield in 2027.

Giorgi Mamardashvili arrived from Valencia last year with a view to replacing our number 1 in the long-term, but Reds chiefs are understood to be looking at a younger option from Europe as a prospective successor in the future.

As reported by journalist Sacha Tavolieri on X, Liverpool are eyeing a move for Genk teenager Lucca Brughmans and have opened talks over a potential swoop for the 18-year-old.

Anfield chiefs are said to be ‘convinced by the future potential’ of the 6 foot 7 colossus, who’s also on Bayern Munich’s radar, and a subsequent report from the Liverpool Echo outlined that the Reds’ Global Talent department has identified him as a ‘potential star’.

That interest comes amid reports from Italy that Nottingham Forest have made an enquiry about the availability of Mamardashvili as they seek to enhance their goalkeeping options before the Tuesday night deadline.

Brughmans has made 15 senior appearances for Genk so far and started each of their first four league games this season (Transfermarkt).

Football Talent Scout‘s Jacek Kulig has described him as a ‘highly talented graduate’ of the Belgian club’s academy, which has also churned out Thibaut Courtois, Koen Casteels and Mike Penders in the past.

The 18-year-old may well develop into a top-class goalkeeper in time to come, but the Liverpool Echo clarified that Reds aren’t looking to sign him before tomorrow night’s deadline, instead seeing him as a future prospect.

As for Mamardashvili, he hasn’t entirely convinced some Liverpool fans in his first season at Anfield and isn’t in the same world-class category as Alisson (very few keepers are, to be fair), but letting him leave this close to the transfer window shutting would be a risk.

Even with Freddie Woodman more than capable of deputising if needed, it’d seem much too premature to give up on the Georgia international, who could still be needed if our number 1 is struck down by further injury problems, something which has happened several times in the past couple of years.

Ideally the Reds will keep hold of the 25-year-old and hopefully entice Brughmans to Merseyside with a view to him eventually becoming our first-choice goalkeeper once he’s ready for that step up.
