In a thrilling conclusion to The Ally Challenge, Steven Alker emerged victorious at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc on August 30. The New Zealand native delivered an impressive final round of 4-under 68, which included four consecutive birdies on the back nine, allowing him to clinch the title and spoil the hopes of a big-name leaderboard.
Alker’s performance marked his 13th win on the PGA Tour Champions, with this being his third victory of the season and his second consecutive win, solidifying his status as one of the top competitors on the 50-and-older circuit. His journey to the top began when he birdied the par-4 12th hole, taking the lead and then extending it with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 13th, while Michael Block, a popular figure in the golfing world, struggled with a bogey.
Reflecting on his approach shot to the 13th, Alker commented, "Perfect number. Worked out well," highlighting the precision that defined his game on Sunday. Following his birdies at the 14th and 15th holes, Alker had a commanding lead, finishing the tournament at 15 under par, three strokes ahead of his nearest competitor, Retief Goosen.
Goosen, a World Golf Hall of Famer and two-time U.S. Open champion, made a strong push during the final round, shooting an impressive 8-under 64. However, missed opportunities at the 13th and 14th holes prevented him from closing the gap further. "It’s been a great week. Obviously wasn’t good enough," Goosen said after the round, acknowledging Alker's superior play.
Stewart Cink, a former British Open champion and previous Ally Challenge winner, finished tied for third with Block and Greg Chalmers, each ending the tournament at 11 under par. Block, who was seeking his first win on the PGA Tour Champions, faced challenges throughout the round, ultimately finishing with a score of 74. Despite his struggles, Block’s performance this week showcased his potential as he continues to adapt to the Champions Tour.
Alker's victory not only adds to his impressive resume but also enhances his position in the Charles Schwab Cup points race, a competition he has won twice in the past. This win in Michigan marks a significant moment in his career, as he previously claimed the Senior PGA Championship title at Harbor Shores in 2022.
The Ally Challenge has become a staple on the PGA Tour Champions calendar, and tournament officials have already announced plans for its return in 2027, ensuring that fans can look forward to more exciting golf in the coming years. With Alker's recent form and the competitive field, the next edition promises to be just as thrilling.
