The Boston Red Sox have been at the center of some controversy following their 16-1 loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday, although over the course of a grueling regular-season grind, there is no time for any MLB team, especially one that’s fighting for a postseason spot, to feel sorry for itself. And on Monday, the Red Sox bounced back in a big way — grabbing a 10-9 victory over the Seattle Mariners in extra innings courtesy of a walk-off single from Trevor Story.

The Mariners chose to get to Story instead of trying to get outs on Caleb Durbin and Jarren Duran. This was to force an out on every base with just one out in the inning, but Story made Seattle pay for that decision in a hurry. Story has been struggling throughout 2026, but he showed up for Boston on the night way before he grabbed the most important hit of the contest — hitting a two-run double in the eighth to cut the Red Sox’s deficit to just one run.

After the game, the veteran shortstop got plenty of props from Red Sox teammate Roman Anthony, whose faith in Story has not wavered despite his rough 2026 campaign.

“I was so happy for him. Every at-bat, he just continues to look better and better and then to trust himself through all the noise,” Anthony said, per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic.

Story entered the night with just three home runs and 19 runs batted in on the year in 42 games, hitting for an OPS of .566. The Red Sox shortstop underwent underwent sports hernia surgery back in May, and he only recently returned to the starting lineup, going 2-3 from the plate in that horrible loss to the Yankees on Sunday.

This is a good sign for the Red Sox, as Story appears to be healthier and more productive than ever as a result.
