East Mississippi Community College (EMCC) has made the unexpected decision to part ways with longtime football coach Buddy Stephens, who had been at the helm for 18 seasons. His tenure included significant achievements, such as leading the Lions to national championships in 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2017-2018, and gaining wider recognition through his appearance on the Netflix series Last Chance U.
Following Stephens' dismissal, associate head coach and offensive coordinator Preston Rice has been appointed as the interim head coach. This change comes just after the Lions secured a 14-6 victory over Southwest Mississippi in their season opener, a game in which Stephens was not present.
The decision to terminate Stephens was reportedly influenced by his public criticism of EMCC and the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC). He voiced his discontent regarding the conference's recent decision to extend the regular season while simultaneously reducing the number of playoff teams. His outspoken remarks included calling the decision-makers “idiots” and describing the changes as “junkified,” highlighting his surprise at the lack of thoughtful consideration behind the new rules.
Stephens' comments did not sit well with EMCC administration. In a statement, EMCC president Scott Alsobrooks expressed that the college “strongly disavows the remarks published in a recent article.” He emphasized that such comments are inconsistent with the institution's core values and standards of professionalism, respect, and civility. Alsobrooks reiterated the college’s commitment to fostering a respectful and collegial environment, stating, “While the college supports open and constructive dialogue, personal attacks have no place in that discourse.”
