2026 US Open mixed doubles is a confusing mess

Let me start by saying that one of my finest experiences in 2025 was attending the early rounds of the US Open mixed doubles championship.

I saw great matches and gained firsthand appreciation of the talent and strategy required for doubles.

Though I cannot attend this year, I am looking forward to watching it on television. That is, if I can figure out who is playing.

Easy breezy 2025 US Open mixed doubles: 8 direct entry and 8 wildcard teams

16 tennis teams competed over the course of two days. The draw was easy to understand. Order of play and match times/locations were published so we could decide who to see and where.

Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori were crowned the champions to a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium. Fans watched the seasoned doubles stars defeat Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in the final.

2026 US Open mixed doubles main draw teams

If I am following it correctly, there are six teams with direct entry based on individual rankings.

Those teams are:
Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic
Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz
Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud
Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli
Amanda Anisimova and Learner Tien
Diana Shnaider with a to-be-determined partner

Shanider needs to be re-paired since her original partner Daniil Medvedev opted out to play the Winston Salem tournament next week.

8 wildcard teams

Then, there are eight wildcard teams.

They are:
Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori
Alexandra Eala and Felix Auger-Aliassime
Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz
Leylah Fernandez and Frances Tiafoe
Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils
Taylor Townsend and Alexander Zverev
Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik
Emma Navarro and Tommy Paul.

Those 14 teams have direct entry.

6 qualifying direct entrants and 2 wildcards

The other two teams will come out of an eight team group consisting of six direct entrant qualifying teams and two wildcard qualifying teams.

The teams on the list could generate heated discussion with the chief sticking point being that Katerina Siniakova, the reigning WTA World No. 1 women’s doubles player. She has to qualify especially after last year’s fiasco. In 2025, she did not get to play because her partner Jannik Sinner withdrew. She was not allowed to re-pair (and should have been able to do so) as Pegula and Fritz did this year because of injured partners.

I am all about progress, but this seems overly complicated and difficult for the well-informed fan to follow during two days of tennis even with shortened sets/matches. Perhaps it will make more sense when the draw and schedule are released.
