The Indianapolis Colts have a pair of joint practices this week with the Atlanta Falcons. The first will take place on Wednesday.
Joint practices have become very common around the NFL and are quite valuable, giving starters and key players game-like reps but in a more controlled environment.
As these practices unfold, here are three things we'll be watching for.
How does the offensive line hold up?We haven't heard much about the starting unit this summer, and typically that's a good thing. But a new opponent brings added intensity and new looks to contend with. Naturally, all eyes often go to the quarterback and skill position players, but consistent success begins up front with providing a run game to lean on and a clean pocket to throw from.
The quarterbacksDaniel Jones has largely performed well this summer, often looking like his old self. But being in a more game-like setting can turn up the intensity and provide a good litmus test for where he's truly at as he returns from injury.
Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard are in what seems to be a very tight competition for the backup role. This is a big week for Leonard, after Richardson was able to have a strong outing in the preseason opener. The tie-breaker could very well go to the player who performs best in these few practices and preseason games.
Colts' pass rushWhether or not the Colts can generate a steady pass rush this season around Laiatu Latu remains to be seen. Micheal Clemons and Jaylahn Tuimoloau both had quiet performances in New England. We didn't see Arden Key in the preseason game, so how he performs in these joint practices may give us the best glimpse of what's to come. Rookie Caden Curry should see more opportunities following his disruptive outing in Week 1.
