As the Buffalo Bills prepare for the 2026 NFL season, Bills Wire will take a look at the most important contributors on their roster. The team has some cornerstone players who will be returning for another shot at bringing a Lombardi Trophy to Buffalo, and they'll have help from some new additions as well.

Leading up to the season, we will be counting down the top-30 most important players on the roster. We'll recap their 2025 season, look ahead to what they'll offer in 2026, and tackle the most pressing questions surrounding them this coming year.

Next on the countdown is Dee Alford.

Background

Position: Cornerback

Age at start of season: 28

Experience: Fifth year

2026 cap hit: $3,230,000

2025 recap

Dee Alford appeared in 16 games for the Falcons in 2025, playing mostly at the nickel cornerback spot. He came away with three interceptions on the year (ranked ninth among NFL corners) and recorded two sacks (ranked second among NFL corners). He also had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. His playmaking ability is what landed him a three-year, $15.75 million deal with Buffalo this offseason.

2026 outlook

Alford was brought in to play at the starting nickel spot in the Bills defense which was formerly occupied by veteran Taron Johnson for many years. While there is a new defensive scheme in town with defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, the nickel spot will still be an important piece to the puzzle, especially when the Bills want to use lighter sub-packages to defend the pass.

Biggest question: How will snaps shake out in the secondary?

If all goes according to plan, Alford will be the starting nickel corner all year. But, as we've seen in the NFL, just one or two injuries can shuffle things around. While Alford specializes in his nickel role, he has also played on the outside boundary in Atlanta, and he's been thrown into that role this preseason when Maxwell Hairston was out. The Bills seem to have some intriguing depth players at nickel and safety, such as Jordan Hancock and Jalon Kilgore, but not so much depth at outside corner after second-round rookie Davison Igbinosun. It will be fun to see how these versatile defensive backs are scattered around the field throughout the year.
