30 most important Bills players of 2026: No. 21 Maxwell Hairston

As the Buffalo Bills prepare for the 2026 NFL season, Bills Wire will take a look at the most important contributors on their roster. The team has some cornerstone players who will be returning for another shot at bringing a Lombardi Trophy to Buffalo, and they'll have help from some new additions as well.

Leading up to the season, we will be counting down the top-30 most important players on the roster. We'll recap their 2025 season, look ahead to what they'll offer in 2026, and tackle the most pressing questions surrounding them this coming year.

Next on the countdown is Maxwell Hairston.

Position: Cornerback

Age at start of season: 23

Experience: Second year

2026 cap hit: $3,467,723

Hairston appeared in just 11 games as a rookie, as the late first-rounder dealt with numerous injuries throughout the year. He suffered a right knee LCL sprain in training camp and missed the first six games of the regular season, and he also suffered an ankle injury in Week 18 which held him out of both playoff games. Hairston received a 64.3 overall grade from Pro Football Focus for 2025, which ranked 51st out of 114 NFL cornerbacks. He split time with Tre'Davious White as CB2 opposite of Christian Benford, starting in three games and intercepting two passes.

Hairston is hoping to lock down the CB2 spot opposite of Benford for 2026 and into the future. While Tre White is now out of the picture, Hairston still has competition in rookie second-rounder Davison Igbinosun, who bring a more physical style as opposed to Hairston's speedier play.

Hairston played mostly zone in college at Kentucky and then was drafted to play for a zone-heavy defensive mind in Sean McDermott. Now, he enters into a situation where he may be asked to play more man-to-man defense under new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, whose Broncos ranked 2nd in NFL in man rate in 2025. Hairston will most likely have to prove he can stick in man coverage to be a big part of Leonhard's plans.
