KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • Josh Tongue and Ollie Robinson took five wickets each as England bowled Pakistan out for 171 at Headingley.
  • It was the first time since 2006 that two England bowlers took five-wicket hauls in the same Test innings.
  • With one match ball between them, the pair came up with a rather unusual solution - splitting it in half.
Josh Tongue and Ollie Robinson share match ball after rare five-wicket double

England’s first day at Headingley in their Test match against Pakistan resulted in a unique performance bowling feat, with Josh Tongue and Ollie Robinson taking five wickets each.

Robinson took 5-51 and Tongue took 5-46 in the game, dismissing Pakistan for 171 in under 50 overs. Tongue and Robinson became the first England pair since Steve Harmison and Monty Panesar in 2006 to share 10 wickets in a Test innings.

This led to an odd debate over which bowler was to keep the ball used in the innings. Instead of selecting one of the bowlers, on the recommendation of the bowlers themselves, the groundsman decided to make a unique move by cutting the ball into two pieces so that both players could have a piece of the ball.

Tongue jokes about putting half the ball on his bathroom door

Speaking in an interview aired by England Cricket, Tongue shed light on how the notion emerged.

"Well, we sort of walked off the pitch, didn't we? And you (Robinson) were like, what should we do? And we were like, oh boy, we'll just split it in half. So I think the groundsman did it. It's actually worked perfect," he said.

Tongue humourously added: "I don't know what I'm going to do with it. I'll either get it mounted or put on my bathroom door handle."

Likewise, Robinson was quite amused with such an unusual memento.

"Yeah, I don't know. I'd probably like stick it somewhere. But it's quite good. I think when we walked off, it's not often you get half a ball. So it's something that we'll remember forever, really. It's quite unique. So yeah, it's quite cool," he said.

So, what did they do with the match ball? 🤔

A simple solution to a unique problem!

England's bowlers put Pakistan under pressure

The five-wicket hauls by Tongue and Robinson were the best part of their impressive bowling performance, during which England chose to bowl after winning the toss.

Right from the outset, Robinson proved to be effective, as he claimed a wicket with the very first delivery and went on to claim four out of Pakistan's top five batsmen. Tongue then finished off the tail with his pace.

Pakistan went down from 97-2 to 171 all out, with only one big score by Abdullah Shafique (61).

England came back strong after tea as they scored 112-2 in the last session of the day. Joe Root was not out at 37, while debutant Jordan Cox scored 23 runs without getting out.
