It's been a relatively quiet training camp for Jacksonville Jaguars' third-round pick Albert Regis. However, as Liam Coen explained after Tuesday's practice, progress is being made.
"I thought today was a better outing," Coen said. "I think maybe the previous few weren't up to his or our standard. And so look, it's a work in progress."
As Coen noted, the defensive tackle position, in particular, is one that can come with a steep learning curve for rookies.
"Any of these young guys, I think DL, especially IDL, is one of the most difficult positions in the NFL to play young, to play early. I think it's extremely difficult. You're 23 years old playing against a lot of grown men, and savvy O-linemen are typically smart, savvy, tough, strong, those things. And so you can get exposed a little bit in there, not just because of getting moved but the little details of technique and fundamentals that I think takes time."
Regis' role is also one that isn't always going to fill the stat sheet either. As a nose tackle, his job is to occupy space, clog running lanes, and take on blockers.
That player isn't always going to record an abundance of tackles or quarterback pressures, but a steady presence inside can help create opportunities for others.
Regis will fill a rotational role as a rookie, but he doesn't have to be "the guy" in Year 1 either, with DaVon Hamilton on the depth chart ahead of him.
