Joint practices in the NFL are notoriously feisty. When you line up against a different colored jersey in the sweltering heat of training camp, tempers naturally flare. Just ask the San Francisco 49ers and the Tennessee Titans, who engaged in multiple skirmishes during their heated joint session last week.

However, when the 49ers welcomed the Los Angeles Chargers for a joint practice on Tuesday, the extracurricular activities suddenly vanished. The two California squads kept things strictly between the whistles, completely avoiding the fisticuffs that plagued San Francisco’s previous matchup.

When reporters asked 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan if he specifically talked to his team about keeping their cool against the Chargers, he couldn’t resist taking a hilarious jab at one of his closest friends.

“No, their head coach [Jim Harbaugh] had more discipline than Tennessee’s [Robert Saleh],” Shanahan quipped, referencing the Titans’ newly hired head coach.

Shanahan quickly clarified that he was only joking, adding that a few early incidents during the Tennessee practice caused the entire day to escalate. But the comedic timing of the shot at Saleh was perfect.

Shanahan and Saleh have a deep history together. Saleh previously served as the defensive coordinator in San Francisco under Shanahan, helping build an elite defense. They remain great friends, which is exactly why they scheduled a joint practice in the first place. Saleh even told reporters earlier this month that he intentionally wanted his young Titans defense to face Shanahan’s complex offensive scheme to expose their flaws.

While the Titans session got a little out of hand, Harbaugh clearly ran a tighter ship with his Chargers on Tuesday. The 49ers and Chargers got their necessary work in without throwing any punches. San Francisco’s offense struggled in the controlled environment, as quarterback Brock Purdy revealed that he wanted more from the offense during team drills. Shanahan will gladly take the clean execution, but he will undoubtedly make sure Saleh hears about his lack of discipline.
