5 takeaways after the final practice of Broncos training camp

That's a wrap on Denver Broncos training camp.

The Broncos held their final training camp practice of the summer with fans in attendance on Wednesday, and attention now turns toward Friday's preseason showdown with the Green Bay Packers. Denver still has more preseason practices to come this month, but they won't be considered official training camp sessions.

After not being scheduled to speak on Tuesday, Broncos coach Sean Payton spoke to media members following Wednesday's practice, and Tuesday's practice fight was one of the first topics. Payton, however, did not dub it a "fight."

"Let's call it a tussle," Payton said. "I got a chance to watch the film — there were no punches; it was just a tussle."

Payton went on to note that the team reviewed a new policy last night that could lead to players getting ejected during games.

"What’s new — from an officiating standpoint — this is our first season where they can go to replay in New York and remove a player," Payton said. "So with that being the case, it’s going to be hard to be the guy that gets the first jab. They’re going to be able to go to replay and get it right. So we discussed that and we had examples of shoving and then the officials just getting bumped, you’re ejected. All of it we kind of covered, especially with the replay now being changed and it’ll be the first season we have that.”

Here are five other quick takeaways from Wednesday's practice.

5 takeaways from Broncos' final training camp practice

1. Broncos injury report: Denver inside linebacker Levelle Bailey (broken leg), center Alex Forsyth (unknown), linebacker Drew Sanders (unknown), wide receiver Michael Bandy (unknown), tight end Caleb Lohner (knee) and offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo (PUPdid not practice on Wednesday. Meanwhile, center Luke Wattenberg (unknown) and wide receiver Marvin Mims (unknown) practiced during individual drills before moving to a side field during team drills.

2. Bo Nix and Jaylen Waddle connectionheats up: The Nix-to-Waddle connection was hot early in camp before Waddle missed time with a strain. Waddle has since recovered and he teamed up with Nix for the "play of the day" on Wednesday, hauling in a deep pass after beating Pat Surtain. The ball traveled 50-to-60 yards in the air and hit Waddle in stride, much to the delight of fans in attendance. "He got a good play," PS2 said of the catch after practice.

3. Davis Webb set to call plays for Bo Nix: Webb called plays last week, but Nix didn't play in the game. Webb also called plays in one preseason game last summer, and Nix also sat out that week. Nix is now set to receive plays from his new offensive coordinator for the first time in a game on Friday evening. "I think it’ll be fun," Nix said after Tuesday's practice. "I think first times are always fun. Get out there, something new, something to get used to. Obviously it’ll be similar to practice. It won’t be much different as far as the headset. It’ll just be in a game-like setting.” Payton said on Monday that Webb did a good job with a good flow and "pretty smooth" operation in the tema's preseason opener last week.

4. Broncos haven't decided if they'll carry three quarterbacks: Denver started last season with Nix and Jarrett Stidham on the active roster and Sam Ehlinger on the practice squad. Ehlinger has been competing for the QB2 job this summer, but Stidham still appears to be the favorite to keep that job. Payton was asked after Wednesday's practice if the team might carry all three QBs on the 53-man roster in 2026. “We'll see," Payton said. "I think yesterday we were talking about it. A lot of it… There are so many things that come into that, but we’ve got time for them [to be sorted out].”

5. Bo Nix and starters will play vs. Packers: After sitting out last week, Nix will play against Green Bay, marking his first live-game action since he broke his ankle in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs in January. Payton said the full snap count plan will be determined by coaches this evening, but he estimated Nix will play about 14 snaps against the Packers. Jordan Love and Green Bay's starters are also expected to play on Friday.

After facing the Packers, Denver will close out preseason at home against the Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 28. Following preseason, the Broncos will build a 53-man roster ahead of the 2026 regular season.
