5 Teams For DeWanna Bonner After Surprise Buyout With Phoenix Mercury

On Monday, the Phoenix Mercury reached a buyout agreement with DeWanna Bonner. Now that Bonner is looking for her next landing spot, several teams can enter the picture and add the two-time WNBA champion to their lineup.

Playing in her 17th season in the league, Bonner can bring veteran leadership, perimeter shooting and secondary playmaking to a playoff contender. Here are five teams that could benefit from Bonner’s skill set as they set their sights on the postseason.

There’s a possibility that the Dallas Wings will finish at No. 8 and face the Minnesota Lynx in the first round of the playoffs. Ahead of this potential matchup against the likes of Napheesa Collier and Kayla McBride, the Wings can beef up their wing rotation with the addition of Bonner. The veteran can provide quality minutes while All-Star forward Jessica Shepard gets some rest.

The Liberty had been banking on Satou Sabally to add versatility to their offense in the playoffs. With Sabally taking a step back from the game after suffering a concussion in late June, the Liberty can acquire Bonner’s services to secure another double-digit scorer in their forward rotation.

Bonner would also fit in well with the frontcourt of the Atlanta Dream, who are bannered by Angel Reese and Naz Hillmon. Bonner’s length and toughness (as well as her 6.1 rebounds per game) can make the Dream even more formidable on the defensive end when the playoffs begin.

Another team with relatively young core pieces is the Washington Mystics. While Shakira Austin, Sonia Citron, and Kiki Iriafen have put in the work to clinch Washington’s first playoff berth in three years, veterans like Bonner allow a young core to have a better fighting chance in the postseason.

Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts has acknowledged that this could be Bonner’s final season in the W. It makes sense, then, for Bonner to reach out to the defending WNBA champions for what could be one last title run.

A tandem of Bonner and reigning WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson would pose problems for opponents down the stretch.
