76ers Official Details How They Convinced Jaylen Brown to Side With Them, Says JB Brings What They’ve Been Missing

Jaylen Brown becoming a member of the Philadelphia 76ers once seemed impossible. His former team, the Boston Celtics, and the Sixers have a rich history of rivalry and competition.

The Celtics parting ways with Brown after a career-best 2025-26 season also seemed like a ridiculous idea.

But it happened, and JB is now a member of the team he once talked trash to after being eliminated from the playoffs.

Bob Myers, President of Sports for HBSE and a member of Philadelphia’s front office, was part of the team that brought Brown to the City of Brotherly Love. Even he wasn’t convinced that acquiring the 2024 Finals MVP was possible.

Myers said that contacting his Celtics counterparts wasn’t among his first thoughts after the Sixers were eliminated by the New York Knicks in the second round.

Brown has joined a team full of stars and potential stars. He will provide another scoring threat alongside Joel Embiid, who was the one who tore up the Celtics in the first round, two-time All-Star Tyrese Maxey, and promising 2025 No. 3 overall pick VJ Edgecombe.

LeBron James is also now a Sixer.

Brown’s ability to attack the rim is a no-brainer. However, according to Myers, there is something else the Sixers will need from him—something the team official believes they have been missing despite having their own superstar.

Philadelphia needs an edge, and Myers believes Brown can provide it.

“We needed an edge, and I think Jaylen Brown sets an edge. To win a championship, you need guys that are of that ilk, that are comfortable being uncomfortable,” Myers said during guesting on the Cousins podcast with Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady.

“I talked to him the day after [the trade] and said ‘don’t ever underestimate that you are a champion. And that there is power in that, so use that with this team.’ And I said, we need you to lead, so I’m going to ask you to lead.”
