AD Mitchell on 2025 fumble for Colts: 'Had to live through that (expletive) over and over'

Former Indianapolis Colt and current New York Jets' wide receiver Adonai Mitchell joined The Pivot Podcast; a show hosted by former NFL players Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor and Channing Crowder.

"Tuesday I woke up a Colt, and went to sleep a New York Jet," Mitchell said on last year's midseason trade that sent him from Indianapolis to New York.

Mitchell (and two first-round picks) was a part of a key trade to bolster the Colts' secondary; bringing Sauce Gardner, a former No. 4 overall pick and elite defensive back to Indianapolis. The Colts were 7-2 at the time of the trade.

Mitchell was selected in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Playing behind Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs and Alec Pierce, the rookie was still able to produce 312 yards on just 23 receptions. His rookie campaign showed promise, but it all started to unravel the following year.

In Week 4 of the 2025 season, Mitchell had a mistake that seemed to unravel his career in Indianapolis.

Following a deep completion, the young receiver evaded two Los Angeles Rams' defenders before nearing the end zone for what would've been a 76-yard Colts' touchdown. As Mitchell neared the goal line, however, he moved the ball from one hand to the other then fumbled the ball through the back of the end zone.

"When it happened, it was very humbling," Mitchell said on his fumble. "It just taught me the little things, the little details of the game."

Adonai Mitchell felt Week 4 was his moment. He made the catch, made the move, and 74 yards later, he was ready to celebrate… But he needed 75.

He also took some time to reflect on the impact the play had on him off the field.

"I had to go home to an empty house and live through that (expletive) over and over," Mitchell said. "I had to look in the mirror, and I knew it was my fault from the jump. I didn't even have to see the replay, I just started jogging off the field. I pretty much know what's going to come from this now."

Mitchell described the internal struggles he faced before he was included in the trade to the Jets five weeks after his fumble in Los Angeles. Now, he is part of a revamped wide receiver room in New York, playing alongside 2026 first round pick Omar Cooper Jr; an Indianapolis native and 2026 college football national champion with Indiana.

"Everything that's in the past, is in the past," Mitchell said. "I can't go back and change it."

Now, Mitchell looks to be a key part of the Jets' offense as he enters year three of his NFL career. Through two professional seasons, Mitchell has accumulated 765 yards and two touchdowns.
