German sportswear giant Adidas has found itself in hot water after launching an advertising campaign that features Shalev Biton, a former Israeli soldier who lost his left leg during military service in 2021. The campaign was designed to promote Adidas's Single Shoe service, which allows amputees to purchase a single shoe at half the price of a standard pair. However, the decision to include Biton has sparked significant controversy and calls for a boycott from various activist groups.
In a statement released on Monday, Adidas acknowledged the backlash, stating, "We recognize that an image used in a recent local activation by the local team has raised concerns and strong reactions." The company emphasized that the promotion was intended as a local initiative rather than a part of a broader global campaign.
Critics have been vocal about their discontent, particularly pro-Palestinian activists who argue that featuring a former Israeli soldier in a campaign focused on amputees is insensitive. They have highlighted the stark contrast between Biton's story and the thousands of Palestinians who have suffered similar fates due to the ongoing conflict. According to estimates from the World Health Organization, Gaza has reported over 5,000 traumatic limb amputations and more than 22,000 major extremity injuries since the escalation of violence in October 2023, with a significant portion of those affected being children.
Among those calling for a boycott of Adidas is Spanish actor Javier Bardem, who has used his social media platform to amplify the criticism against the brand. Bardem's posts have drawn attention to the ethical implications of the campaign, urging consumers to reconsider their support for Adidas in light of the controversy.
Adidas's Single Shoe service was launched in January across 23 European countries, aiming to promote inclusivity by allowing individuals with limb differences to purchase only the shoes they need. The initiative was developed in collaboration with various disability groups, including ParalympicsGB, to ensure that it meets the needs of the amputee community.
Despite the backlash, Adidas has reiterated its commitment to inclusion and diversity. The company stated that it will continue to listen to feedback and work towards actions that align with the inclusive values it aims to uphold. The program is set to expand further across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, including regions such as Palestine, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and Egypt.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Adidas will navigate the backlash and whether the controversy will have a lasting impact on its brand reputation.
