The University of Akron men's basketball program has bolstered its roster with the addition of Kamrin Oriol, who announced his commitment to the Zips on September 3, 2023. This move comes as the team prepares for the 2026-27 season, marking a significant step in their recruitment efforts under new head coach Dustin Ford.
Oriol, a 6-foot-3 guard hailing from St. Petersburg, Florida, brings a wealth of experience to Akron after spending the last two seasons at the University of North Florida. During his time there, he demonstrated impressive scoring ability, notably earning a spot on the All-Atlantic Sun second team last season. In the 2025-26 season, he played in all 32 games, starting each one, and averaged an impressive 20.9 points per game, alongside 4.2 assists and 3.0 rebounds. His shooting percentages were also noteworthy, as he connected on 48.0% of his field goal attempts, 40.2% from three-point range, and 88.7% from the free-throw line.
Prior to his tenure at North Florida, Oriol played two seasons at The Master’s University, an NAIA institution located in Santa Clarita, California. His performance there laid the foundation for his future success, as he averaged 15.3 points per game in his final season at Master’s, showcasing his capability as a scorer and playmaker. Oriol's journey has been marked by consistent improvement, beginning with a solid freshman year where he was named the Great Southwest Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year.
As a high school athlete at Admiral Farragut Academy, Oriol surpassed the 1,000-point milestone, highlighting his scoring prowess early in his career. His commitment to Akron marks him as the seventh transfer to join the Zips, who are looking to build a competitive roster for the upcoming season.
Under the leadership of first-year head coach Dustin Ford, the Zips are looking to continue their recent success in the NCAA Tournament. Akron has participated in the tournament four times in the last five years, claiming Mid-American Conference Tournament championships in 2022, 2024, 2025, and 2026. This strong track record sets a high expectation for the team as they integrate new talent like Oriol into their lineup.
With the addition of Kamrin Oriol, Akron aims to enhance its offensive capabilities and maintain its competitive edge in the Mid-American Conference. The Zips will be looking to build on their recent successes and make another run at the NCAA Tournament, and Oriol’s experience and scoring ability will be crucial in achieving those goals.
