The Alabama Crimson Tide have officially made their decision at quarterback.

Sophomore Keelon Russell has been named Alabama’s starting quarterback for the 2026 season, ending an offseason competition with senior Austin Mack. The decision was announced Saturday as Alabama prepares for its season opener against East Carolina on Sept. 5.

Russell Wins the Job

Russell entered the competition as one of the most highly regarded young quarterbacks in the country. The former five star recruit was ranked as the No. 2 quarterback and No. 2 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class by 247Sports.

Despite having limited playing time as a freshman, Russell made the most of his opportunities. He appeared in two games last season, completing 11 of 15 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 17 yards.

His playmaking ability ultimately helped separate him from Mack during the offseason competition. Alabama quarterbacks coach Bryan Ellis said Russell earned the job because of his ability to make plays with the football.

A New Era in Tuscaloosa

Russell now takes over an Alabama offense that is looking for a new identity following the departure of Ty Simpson, who was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

The expectations surrounding Russell will be high. His combination of arm talent, mobility and playmaking ability gives Alabama another dynamic option at quarterback and could raise the ceiling of Kalen DeBoer’s offense.

Russell also brings an impressive high school résumé to Tuscaloosa. At Duncanville High School in Texas, he won two state championships and was named the 2024-25 Gatorade National Player of the Year.

The Russell Era Begins

Alabama enters the 2026 season ranked No. 13 nationally after finishing 11-4 last season. Now, all eyes will be on Russell when he makes his first career start against East Carolina.

For Alabama fans, the wait is over. The Crimson Tide have chosen their quarterback, and the Keelon Russell era is officially underway.
