Sophie Cunningham’s patriotism seems to have earned her a massive following. Her firm stance against the inclusion of trans athletes in women’s sports has also added to her appeal with this fanbase.
Saturday’s game between the Indiana Fever and New York Liberty led to yet another showcase online of how many members of the WNBA fan community are ‘ride or die’ for Cunningham, as they praised her for her gesture during the national anthem.
Sophie Cunningham Gets a Great Deal of Love from Fans After National Anthem OrdealDepending on the demographics of the city Cunningham plays in, she gets different reactions from the crowd in the arena. Saturday night’s game in New York against the Liberty saw fans allegedly boo the Fever star during the national anthem.
The WNBA world online wasn’t having it, and defended her ad nauseam, calling out the Liberty for not taking the court for the anthem.
“New York Liberty players hid in the locker room during the National Anthem. Sophie Cunningham is the ONLY player on the court with her hand over her heart,” said White House correspondent, Alec Lace.
One user kept it simple and said, “The WNBA is a WOKE JOKE.”
“The national anthem wasn’t optional. Sophie Cunningham stood alone with her hand on her heart, while the other players chose to avoid it. That’s why she earned respect,” said another X user.
The author of the book titled ‘The Real Joe Biden: Decades of Racism, Lies, Incompetence and More’, Tom Young, took to social media to voice his distaste as well. He said,
“Cunningham is an All-American rock star! The New York Liberty should change their team name, as they know nothing about Liberty…. how about New York ungrateful cowards! And New York fans…. Hope you’re enjoying Mamdani!”
Another user praised the Fever guard’s actions, saying, “SOPHIE is the QUEEN of the League.”
It isn’t just online fans who are professing their love for Cunningham and her ideologies. Jennifer Sey, the founder and CEO of XX-XY Athletics, said in July, “She’s just got such an incredible personality. She’s fun, and she’s funny, and she’s tough, and she says what she thinks, and that’s what we’re all about.”
Rallies held by organizations such as ‘Moms For Liberty’ have also fully supported the Fever star’s stance.
With nationwide attention being hurled toward Cunningham, it’s easy for her to feel overwhelmed. However, prior to Liberty-Fever, she admitted that this isn’t the case.
“Look at my stats…I don’t know why people think this is such a big distraction…great time to be a Fever.”
Amid the politically charged off-court controversies, Cunningham looks set on not letting the noise distract her from her role as a bench asset after Indiana clinched a playoff spot prior to the Liberty clash.
