“Almost Gave Me a Headache”: Paige Bueckers Fans Heave a Sigh of Relief After Superstar Turns Scoreless First Half Into 22-Point Game

Paige Bueckers’ fans had a roller coaster night because of the superstar’s performance on Wednesday in the Dallas Wings’ 94-88 win over the Toronto Tempo. Bueckers had a scoreless first half on 0-for-7 shooting. Just as it seemed like the superstar might have one of the lowest-scoring performances of her career, she flipped the switch in the second half.

Bueckers finished the game with 22 points, three rebounds, eight assists and three steals. She shot 38.9% from the field and 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. Bueckers turned her night around in the third quarter, with 13 points on 100% shooting.

It was a much-needed effort as Toronto could have made it a close contest down the stretch if Paige Bueckers’ struggles continued.

The Wings couldn’t have afforded another loss, especially against a lottery-bound team at this stage. Entering Wednesday’s game, they were on a three-game losing streak. However, Paige Bueckers willed them to a much-needed win behind her personal second-half comeback.

Arike Ogunbowale also had a bounce-back game, scoring 21 points and dishing five assists. While Ogunbowale shot a subpar 4-for-12 from the field, she was 13-for-14 from the free-throw line. The veteran guard had scored five points apiece in her last two games against Golden State and Minnesota, contributing to the Wings’ blowout losses.

Alanna Smith and Awak Kuier also did well with 13 and 14 points, respectively. Smith had a double-double with 11 rebounds. The Wings played without Azzi Fudd for the third straight game and Jessica Sheppard, who exited Sunday’s loss at Minnesota in five minutes due to an injury.

The Wings improved to 20-14 with this win, staying in the hunt for a top-four finish. They are 1.5 games behind the 21-12 Indiana Fever, their next opponent. Dallas will hope Fudd and Sheppard return for the blockbuster clash scheduled on Friday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Paige Bueckers and Co. won 107-104 in a thrilling finish when the teams first met this season on May 9 in their respective season openers.
