Amar Johnson made sure his first preseason opportunity with the Los Angeles Chargers would be difficult to overlook.
In the Chargers’ 27-7 victory over the Houston Texans, Johnson showed several flashes of the explosiveness that made him an intriguing addition to the Bolts’ running back room. His overall numbers were not overwhelming on the ground, but his ability to contribute as both a runner and receiver made for an encouraging preseason debut.
Johnson finished the game with six carries for 17 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He also added two receptions for 68 yards, including a 55-yard catch that provided one of the biggest plays of his night.
For a young running back fighting for a roster spot, that kind of production matters. The path to a roster spot, however, will not be easy.
The Chargers have a crowded running back room as it stands. Omarion Hampton is expected to play a major role in the offense after having a full offseason under his belt, while Keaton Mitchell brings legitimate big-play ability to the group. Kimani Vidal also remains in the mix after providing signs of life in the Los Angeles backfield last season.
That leaves players like Johnson fighting for opportunities behind several backs who already have established roles within the organization. However, his performance against Houston could help him make that case.
The two rushing touchdowns were particularly important because they demonstrated his ability to finish drives when given an opportunity near the goal line. While six carries are not enough to draw sweeping conclusions about his ability as a runner at the next level, Johnson showed that he can take advantage of limited opportunities.
His receiving production may have been even more encouraging. The 55-yard reception showcased the type of explosiveness that can separate a player competing for a depth role from the rest of the field. Running backs who can contribute in the passing game provide additional value, particularly in an offense being installed by new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.
Johnson was not the only Chargers running back to make an impression, either.
Undrafted free agent Greg DeRosiers showed promise during the opener, while Jared Patterson also put together a solid performance. Both players are competing for opportunities in a crowded room, making every preseason snap increasingly important.
That competition means Johnson still has plenty of work to do. One strong preseason game will not guarantee him a roster spot, particularly with Hampton, Mitchell and Vidal ahead of him in the pecking order.
Still, Johnson gave the coaching staff something to think about.
