Deshaun Watson was booed by the Cleveland crowd in the Browns’ preseason game against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. Watson is locked in a battle with Shedeur Sanders for the starting QB role, and it is clear who the Browns fans favor.
Head coach Todd Monken has kept the QB1 position open to anyone who can impress, but fans are in favor of Sanders, and former NFL player Robert Griffin III has advised the Browns to take note of this.
“As an organization, there is no way Cleveland can name anyone but Shedeur Sanders the starting quarterback if they want the support of the city,” Griffin wrote on X.
Fan frustration with Watson may also have something to do with the fact that he missed the entirety of the 2025 campaign with an Achilles tendon injury and is entering the final year of a huge $230 million deal signed back in 2022, that fans clearly feel should mean he does more for the team.
Deshaun Watson Hurt After Being Booed By His Home CrowdPerhaps understandably, Deshaun Watson was affected by the lack of support at Huntington Bank Stadium and addressed the boos in the postgame press conference.
“I think the biggest thing is, I think you guys know too, and I think the whole world knows. It has nothing to do with the performance. It’s a little more personal than that,” Watson told reporters.
“So, I think it’s a disrespectful thing. I’ma keep whatever I feel with me and my family internally on how I feel about that and yeah, just move on.”
Watson completed five of 12 passes for 36 yards and tossed an interception.
