SAN ANGELO, Texas — In a significant development for the Angelo State University (ASU) Rodeo Team, the university has announced the hiring of Nathan Clawson as the new assistant coach. This decision was made public on Thursday, marking a new chapter for the team as they prepare for upcoming competitions.
Nathan Clawson, a former member of the ASU Rodeo Team, brings valuable experience to his new role. Last season, he competed in the Lone Star Region, achieving a top-10 finish in tie-down roping. Before his time at ASU, Clawson honed his skills over three years at South Plains College, where he gained a solid foundation in collegiate rodeo.
Head Coach Casey Sisk, who has led the ASU Rodeo Team thus far, expressed his enthusiasm for Clawson's appointment. Sisk emphasized that Clawson was the ideal candidate due to his prior experience in college rodeo, which aligns with the team's objectives. "Nathan was the best candidate because he has prior college rodeo experience," Sisk stated. He further noted Clawson's understanding of the team's goals and standards, highlighting his interpersonal skills. Sisk believes Clawson's presence will allow him to concentrate more on individualized coaching for each team member.
In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Clawson will serve as the first arena facilities manager for the ASU Rodeo Complex located at the San Angelo Fairgrounds. Sisk acknowledged the challenges of maintaining the arena, stating, "The upkeep on the arena is a lot, and there are still tons of renovations and improvement projects going on." Clawson shared his thoughts on his new position, expressing a deep connection with the student-athletes. "It means a lot, because I can really relate to the students," he remarked. Clawson, who is closer in age to the students, aims to help them balance their academic and rodeo aspirations while guiding them in their post-ASU journeys.
His background extends beyond college rodeo; Clawson has worked with a stock contractor, coordinated farrier schedules, and led hunting trips. He played a pivotal role in organizing ASU's inaugural College Rodeo last fall, further demonstrating his commitment to the program.
Clawson underscored the importance of maintaining a safe and well-prepared arena for both the student-athletes and the animals. "For the past six years, I have been responsible for preparing the ground at my home arena, ensuring safe and consistent conditions," he explained.
