Manchester City have announced the signing of Argentina goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille for an undisclosed fee, reported to be £1.7 million ($1.96 million).
The 34-year-old, who has returned for a second spell at the Etihad Stadium, has agreed a two-year deal to become back-up for City’s number one Gianluigi Donnarumma.
City said: “Manchester City is delighted to announce the signing of Geronimo Rulli. The Argentina international goalkeeper has joined the club from Olympique de Marseille on a two-year deal, keeping him at the Etihad Stadium until June 2028.
“Rulli will wear the No. 28 shirt and becomes the latest addition to Enzo Maresca’s squad – subject to international clearance – adding further quality and competition to City’s goalkeeping group on his return to Manchester, having previously spent a brief time at the club during the 2016-17 season.”
Rulli did not make a first-team appearance for City before departing to Real Sociedad in January 2017, while he also spent time on loan at Montpellier and had spells at Villarreal and Ajax.
He was included in Argentina’s World Cup squad as understudy to Emiliano Martinez but did not feature and is City’s second close-season signing under new boss Enzo Maresca following the arrival of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million.
Rulli fills the void left by fellow goalkeeper James Trafford, who joined Leeds last week in a reported deal worth up to £45 million.
