Arizona Cardinals Injury Updates Ahead of Season Opener Against Chargers

As the Arizona Cardinals gear up for their season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, head coach Mike LaFleur has shared some updates regarding the health of key players. This week’s practice schedule includes a jog-through on Wednesday followed by a regular practice on Thursday, which will be the last session before the team takes a break until Labor Day.

According to NFL regulations, all players will have a mandatory break from Friday through Sunday, making the timing of these injury updates crucial for the coaching staff as they finalize their roster for the upcoming game.

One of the most significant injury concerns is veteran running back James Conner, who was placed on injured reserve on Sunday. Conner is recovering from a serious ankle injury sustained early in the 2025 season. While he was not placed on the active/physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp, he participated in drills but did not engage in 11-on-11 activities throughout the summer. LaFleur expressed that while Conner is not far from returning, the decision to place him on injured reserve was made to prioritize both his health and the organization's long-term interests. "He’s not far off, but it just was in the best interest of the player and the organization to give him a little bit more time," LaFleur stated.

Another player to watch is running back Jeremiyah Love, who is reportedly 50-50 to play in Week 1. Following a low-grade high-ankle sprain, Love's recovery timeline aligns closely with the Cardinals' upcoming game. LaFleur noted that Love is making progress, stating, "Confident that he is progressing really well. So, he’s taken another step. Took a step yesterday (Sunday). He’ll take another step today (Monday)." With the game against the Chargers approaching, the team remains hopeful for his return.

Slot cornerback Garrett Williams, who came off the active/PUP list on August 20, is also on the mend. LaFleur described Williams as “progressing well” and in good spirits. Although he has been sidelined for a portion of the preseason, the coach indicated that Williams’ status will be evaluated leading up to the game. The release of Sean Murphy-Bunting, who had been filling in at slot corner, leaves an opportunity for Williams to potentially contribute if he is cleared to play.

Right guard Isaiah Adams is dealing with an ankle injury that prevented him from traveling to Green Bay for joint practices and the final preseason game. LaFleur confirmed that Adams is doing well and is expected to continue his recovery process leading into Week 1. The decision to keep him off the flight was made to ensure he receives the best treatment possible.

Quarterback Carson Beck, who suffered a rib injury during the Hall of Fame Game on August 6, has returned to practice and is considered “full go” this week. LaFleur expressed that while Beck is back in practice, it may take time for him to regain his previous rhythm and comfort level on the field.

Lastly, second-round draft pick Will Johnson is dealing with a lower-body injury, which LaFleur has kept vague. The head coach confirmed that Johnson is progressing but did not provide specific details about the nature of his injury. As the Cardinals prepare for the Chargers, the coaching staff is taking a cautious approach with Johnson, ensuring he is ready for the regular season.

These injury updates come at a critical time for the Cardinals as they finalize their roster and game plan for the upcoming season. With the opener against the Chargers just around the corner, the team is focused on maximizing the health and readiness of their players.
