Aston Villa's head coach Natalia Arroyo has expressed confidence in her team's readiness for the upcoming Barclays Women’s Super League season, hinting at a revitalized squad following a busy transfer window. The Villans are set to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in their season opener this afternoon.

In a pre-match press conference, Arroyo praised her players and conveyed her optimism about the potential of the new season. "We’re happy with the movement in the transfer window," she stated. "We’ve brought in a good mix of players with talent, experience, ambition, and a new energy to bring us to the next step that we need. We ended last season knowing what we were lacking and where we were strong."

Arroyo's comments reflect the significant changes within the squad, which has welcomed eight new permanent signings aimed at enhancing depth and competitiveness. The attacking lineup has been bolstered by the arrivals of Mia McAuley, Amelie Vangsgaard, and Kamilla Melgård, alongside loanee Lily Murphy. This influx of talent comes in the wake of the departure of key goalscorer Kirsty Hanson, a transition Arroyo acknowledges with respect. "We have learned a lot from her and we want the fans to welcome her when they see her because we appreciate what she did for us," Arroyo noted. "But the 2026/27 season isn’t about Kirsty Hanson."

During pre-season, Villa faced a variety of opponents, allowing them to explore different styles of play and develop their attacking strategies. Arroyo emphasized that this preparation has showcased the team's evolving attacking capabilities. "Time after time, game after game, you’ll know the different attacking threats that we have now," she said.

Today marks the second consecutive year that Aston Villa will travel to London to face Chelsea on the opening day of the season, but it is the first time they will play at the iconic Stamford Bridge. Arroyo expressed her excitement about this challenge, stating, "We’ve been wanting this first game to come and starting in Stamford Bridge is a strong start. I’m here because I want these types of challenges, so I’m excited too. Let’s see if we can start the league on a good tone."

When asked whether it was advantageous to face Chelsea, who have also undergone personnel changes over the summer, Arroyo maintained a pragmatic view. "It is what it is. This first game you won’t see teams fully-formed over 90 minutes; probably what you’ll see from us and them are lots of substitutions as players get their rhythm back," she explained. "We feel ready. We know that if we don’t play them this time, we still need to play them later, so we’re happy with the schedule."

Consistency has been a focal point in Villa's training this summer, as Arroyo highlighted the importance of maintaining intensity regardless of circumstances. "It’s not just about what you can do every day in training but bringing that to the competition with confidence," she said. "Now, it’s not about talking; it’s about showing, so hopefully, we can be proud at the end of the game against Chelsea and also at the end of the season."

As the season unfolds, Arroyo remains realistic about expectations. "We just want to be in a position where we can compete every weekend, start the game well and end the game well. We dream big, but we will go step-by-step and we know that action, not talk, will bring us there," she concluded. Aston Villa’s Barclays Women’s Super League match against Chelsea kicks off at 12:30 PM today.
