The New Orleans Saints suffered a 34-0 defeat against the Los Angeles Rams in the last preseason game. The black and gold were the underdogs, but nobody expected them to be blown out. The miserable showing drew some harsh words from former New Orleans star and five-time Pro Bowler Terron Armstead.
“Yesterday’s Saints game was BAD bad!!” Armstead wrote on X. “Preseason or not, team tired, joint practices, 🤷 we will never make excuses in Nola‼️I believe in this team, their leaders, and what they’re building! I expect this team to take yesterday personal and do something about it!⚜️.”
New Orleans finished with just 293 total yards of offense. They were also plagued by three turnovers and 12 penalties, which cost them an additional 96 yards. It marked the Saints’ lowest scoring output in the preseason since a 42-6 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs back in 1996.
At quarterback, Zach Wilson had a prime opportunity to impress the coaching staff, but failed to capitalize. He finished with a meager 6-of-12 completions for 55 yards and an interception after a respectable show vs the Jaguars in Week 1. Spencer Rattler went 14-of-23 for 141 yards, but threw an interception in the red zone, which was returned for a painful 100 yards by Rams’ Alex Cook.
The defense ended up being carved up by QB2 Stetson Bennett, who finished 19-of-31 for 181 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns. The defense allowed a whopping 405 total yards. New Orleans’ rushing defense has now become a point of concern, having allowed 151 yards on the ground vs the Rams after the Jacksonville Jaguars charged through with 118.
Kellen Moore knows a lot will go on the drawing board for the entire team to assess and come out of. As Armstead said, the Saints head coach isn’t backing down from the challenges still lying ahead of them.
“Regular season, pre-season, does not matter,” he said after the game. “You know, those ones aren’t the ones you want. You know, that was a big-time missed opportunity for us. It starts with me: we didn’t respond the right way.
” … At the end of the day, film is your resume in this league—coaches, players. We didn’t coach well enough to prepare ourselves to take advantage of this opportunity, and so, obviously, hopefully it’s going to be a really valuable lesson for our team, a response opportunity for our team moving forward with one more week of essentially pre-season football, preparation week, and a game in Dallas
It’s been a tough preseason for the New Orleans so far, already having lost the Week 1 clash to the Jacksonville Jaguars. With another disappointing loss on their books, will they bounce back against a 2-0 Dallas? We will have to wait and watch.
