The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is taking steps to address the challenges posed by a congested cricket schedule, particularly regarding player welfare and preparation for major series. During a review meeting held at the BCCI headquarters, Secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized the need for better planning in the Future Tours Programme (FTP) to ensure that Indian cricketers receive adequate rest and practice time before competing in SENA countries, which include South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia.
Saikia's comments came after a thorough evaluation of India's recent performances, particularly their limited-overs tours in England and Ireland, where the team struggled. The meeting involved key figures from Indian cricket, including Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and VVS Laxman, the director of cricket at the Centre of Excellence. Notably, selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar was unable to attend, even via video conferencing.
One of the primary concerns raised by Saikia was the sheer volume of matches scheduled throughout the year, which can lead to player fatigue and increased risk of injuries. He stated, “The only challenge which we are facing is that there are too many matches in the year and that is why in the next FTP we will do certain things, we will take certain measures.” This acknowledgment highlights the BCCI's commitment to prioritizing player health and performance.
To address these issues, the BCCI plans to implement measures that would allow for better scheduling, including ensuring that players have time to acclimatize and participate in friendly matches before embarking on major tours. Saikia noted, “We have instructed our FTP persons who will be meeting very soon in various international forums that our FTP should be in such a way it should be scheduled that there is proper rest for the players.”
In addition to discussing scheduling, the meeting also focused on analyzing India's performances in recent series. The team faced setbacks, losing the two-match T20I series against Ireland 0-2 and the T20I series against England 1-4, followed by a 1-2 defeat in the three-match ODI series. Saikia remarked that the team needs to engage in some “soul searching” to identify areas for improvement, indicating a proactive approach to enhancing the team's competitive edge.
Looking ahead, the BCCI has laid out a roadmap aimed at achieving better results in the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup. Saikia expressed confidence in the direction of Indian cricket, stating, “There is proper coordination amongst all the wings of BCCI,” which suggests a unified effort to enhance the team's performance on the international stage.
As the BCCI prepares for future challenges, the focus on a well-structured FTP and player well-being will be crucial in navigating the demands of international cricket and ensuring that Indian players are equipped to perform at their best.
