Ben Dhiman, a native of Cincinnati and a graduate of Sycamore High School in 2010, has made a remarkable mark in the world of trail ultrarunning. This past weekend, he achieved a significant milestone by winning the prestigious Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc, held in the stunning landscapes of Chamonix, France.

Dhiman's victory comes just a year after he finished as the runner-up in the same event. In a stunning display of endurance and skill, he completed the grueling 174-kilometer (108-mile) race, which features a daunting vertical gain of nearly 32,000 feet, in an impressive time of 18 hours, 16 minutes, and 29 seconds. This achievement not only secured him the top spot but also established a new event record, surpassing the previous mark set by Britain's Tom Evans in 2025.

While the record is not officially recognized due to a rerouting of part of the course over the last two years for safety reasons, Dhiman's performance remains historic. He is the first athlete to finish the race in under 19 hours, a feat that underscores his exceptional preparation and determination. He finished with a significant 31-minute lead over his closest competitor, fellow American Caleb Olson, highlighting his dominance in the event.

In a post-race interview, Dhiman reflected on his experience, stating, “I quickly found myself alone, but I decided to stick to my own pace without slowing down. One of the main goals of my preparation was to become more comfortable on technical sections, and I think that helped me become faster and gain confidence. I feel very lucky to be able to run these trails, in these incredible mountains, and do what I love.” His words resonate with many in the ultrarunning community, emphasizing the importance of mental resilience and self-belief in such challenging conditions.

Dhiman's journey to the top of the ultrarunning world has been shaped by his early experiences in athletics, particularly during his youth soccer career. His passion for endurance sports blossomed through various adventures, including extensive hikes on the Appalachian Trail and the western Continental Divide, as well as a memorable trek across Nepal in 2018. These experiences have not only honed his physical abilities but also instilled a deep appreciation for the natural landscapes he now competes in.

The Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc is one of the most prestigious ultramarathons globally, attracting elite runners from around the world. Dhiman's record-setting performance adds to the rich history of this event and showcases the growing competitiveness of American athletes in the ultrarunning scene. As he continues to push the boundaries of his capabilities, fans and fellow competitors alike will be eager to see what the future holds for this remarkable athlete.
