Ben Saraf, the Israeli guard for the Brooklyn Nets, has made a significant impact during his inaugural season in the NBA, embodying the hopes of a new generation of Israeli basketball players. At just 20 years old, Saraf has already established himself as a promising talent, playing in 44 games and averaging 7.5 points, 3.3 assists, and 2.1 rebounds per game.

Israeli basketball has seen a resurgence in recent years, largely influenced by the success of players like Deni Avdija, who has become a standout for the Portland Trail Blazers. Avdija's achievements, including his selection for the NBA All-Star Game, have inspired many young athletes in Israel, proving that the dream of playing in the NBA is attainable.

Before joining the Nets, Saraf honed his skills in Europe, where he played for teams in Netanya, Kiryat Ata, and Ulm. His transition to the NBA has not been without challenges, but he has embraced the opportunity to grow and serve as a role model for aspiring basketball players in Israel. Recently, Saraf participated in an event in Rishon LeZion, hosted by renowned YouTuber and sports analyst Pini Barel, which allowed him to connect with fans and share his experiences in the league.

During a recent interview, Saraf expressed his excitement about meeting Israeli fans and the significance of such events for the local basketball culture. "It’s amazing to see people wearing my jersey. That’s really exciting. I hadn’t been back to Israel for quite a while, so it’s always great to come home,” he shared.

Playing in New York City has provided Saraf with unique opportunities to engage with the large Jewish community outside of Israel. He has taken advantage of this by attending numerous community events, including Friday night dinners and visits to Chabad houses. His commitment to connecting with his heritage is evident, as he also visited a Jewish school in Cleveland to inspire young students.

As he reflects on his rookie season, Saraf acknowledges the areas where he needs to improve. He shot 39.6 percent from the field and 83 percent from the free-throw line, but he recognizes that his three-point shooting needs work, having made only 21.1 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. "This summer, I’m focusing a lot on improving my shooting, getting stronger physically, and learning how to prepare for games,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Saraf has set personal and team goals for the upcoming season. He emphasized the importance of winning games and earning the trust of the coaching staff. "Whoever helps the team win is going to play. So for me, it’s about earning minutes and being impactful,” he stated.

Moreover, representing Israel on the national team remains a top priority for Saraf. Although he could not participate in the recent World Cup qualifying window due to his commitments with the Nets, he is eager to play alongside Avdija and contribute to the future of Israeli basketball. "Whenever I play for the national team, that’s when I enjoy basketball the most,” he remarked.

As he gears up for his second season, Saraf is determined to build on his strong finish from the previous year, where he averaged 17.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assists over the final four games of the season. His ability to adapt and improve will be crucial as he aims to solidify his role within the Nets and help lead the team to success.

In the fast-paced world of the NBA, Saraf is not only focused on his own development but is also keenly aware of the league's dynamics, especially with the recent player trades that have reshaped team lineups. Despite the excitement of his NBA journey, he still cherishes the simple pleasures of home, including the beach and the weather in Israel.
