Ben Stokes is gearing up to make a significant impact in the Big Bash League (BBL) as he joins the Adelaide Strikers for the upcoming season. Confirmed on Tuesday, Stokes’ one-year contract ensures his availability for the entirety of the BBL, and coach Tim Paine is optimistic about the all-rounder’s contributions across all facets of the game.
Paine has expressed his belief that Stokes, who has a wealth of international experience, could be particularly effective if he takes on the role of opening batsman. Last season, the Strikers relied on Matt Short and Chris Lynn as their primary opening duo. However, with Lynn currently without a contract, there is potential for a change in that partnership, which could see Stokes stepping into the opening position.
“Stokes gives us a lot of flexibility. I think initially my chats around how we would use him would probably be opening the batting. I think he’s made to open the batting in Big Bash. The pacy, bouncy wickets in Australia really suit him,” Paine stated, as reported by ESPNcricinfo. This strategic move could leverage Stokes’ aggressive batting style, which is well-suited to the fast-paced nature of the BBL.
Paine further emphasized Stokes’ capability to dominate the game, noting his ability to shift the momentum of an innings rapidly. “I have been on the end of a couple of these devastating innings in Test cricket where you feel like you cannot defend the field. He can play 360 degrees. He has got power. He has got some real class,” Paine remarked, highlighting the all-rounder’s versatility and skill.
Historically, Stokes has opened in only 16 of his 148 T20 innings, but his statistics indicate that he thrives in that role. With an average of 36.53 and a strike rate of 138.48 as an opener, his performance includes a notable unbeaten 107 runs off 60 balls for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2020 IPL. While he has predominantly batted at positions three, four, or five in T20 formats, Paine is confident that opening could be the best fit for Stokes and the team.
“I think he can do a terrific job opening the batting. Playing pretty normally, as we have seen in the past, he can flick a switch, and he has got amazing power. His skill level with the bat and his play of spin, he has just a well-rounded, world-class batter,” Paine added, reinforcing his belief in Stokes’ potential to excel in the BBL.
In addition to his batting prowess, Paine also sees Stokes making a significant impact with the ball. He noted that Stokes possesses surprising pace and the ability to swing the ball, making him a valuable asset in various phases of a match. “He is a bit quicker than people think. He has got great skill. He can swing the ball both ways. We feel like we can use him in all phases of the game with the ball as well. He will impact in the field with his athleticism and just the way he competes,” Paine explained.
With a record of 352 wickets for England in international cricket, Stokes’ best bowling figures of 6/22 showcase his capability to deliver crucial performances. As the BBL season approaches, the Adelaide Strikers and their fans eagerly await the contributions of Stokes, whose all-around abilities could prove pivotal in their campaign.
