Bengals defensive rookie roundup vs. Chicago Bears

Saturday night was a fun one in the Queen City as the Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Chicago Bears 27-9 during preseason game two. While the Bengals’ second-round draft selection, Cashius Howell, did not play, we still saw fantastic performances from other draft picks from this past April.

The Bengals selected Davis with the 72nd overall selection in the third round. The physical attributes immediately stand out for a cornerback. Davis is 6’4”, 194 pounds, and ran in the 4.4’s in the 40-yard dash. While some of the change-of-direction ability in coverage can leave a bit to be desired, this is a physical presence playing at outside corner.

Davis didn’t waste any time getting physical against the run on Saturday night. Davis finished the game with 7 tackles, including some big plays near or behind the line of scrimmage. For a team that has struggled with missed tackles, it was refreshing to see a player who consistently wrapped up and embraced the physical part of playing defense.

Robinson continued making splash plays in the second preseason game against the Bears. He finished the game with 3 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a pass defensed at the line. This guy is built like a fire hydrant. He has the strength to maintain gap integrity, but his bread and butter is what he does rushing the passer. His closing burst, relentless effort in pursuit, and natural leverage all allow him to be a consistent headache for opposing offenses.

I can’t see how the Bengals keep him off the 53-man roster. Not only would I have him on the roster, but I would also have him active on gamedays. He can play fullback on the goal line, could add value on special teams, and even if just as a rotational pass rusher, I think he would make an impact this year if given the opportunity.

Robinson has done everything right, and we all know that the Naval Academy graduate will not be outworked.

Dingle wasn’t a draft selection, but was quickly signed as an undrafted free agent. After not hearing much about him throughout camp, it was nice to see him making plays. The former Cincinnati Bearcat is trying to solidify a spot on the practice squad this season. If he can be able to do that and stick around, he could potentially be a player down the road that they develop into a rotational player and special teams guy.
