The Buffalo Bills struck a deal with free agent defensive lineman Greg Gaines and released DT Tommy Akingbesote on Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, just prior to the team’s second preseason matchup against the Cleveland Browns.

Gaines began his NFL career with the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. He won the Super Bowl with the Rams at the end of the 2021 season as the team’s starting defensive tackle.

The 30-year-old Gaines most recently played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2023-25. He recorded two sacks and three tackles for loss with Tampa Bay in 2025.

The Dallas Cowboys selected Akingbesote with the No. 247 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He signed a two-year deal with the Bills on Jan. 19. Akingbesote has yet to play a game in the NFL in his career to date. Akingbesote will get the opportunity to survey the NFL’s landscape and seek a new deal in the open market prior to the start of next season.

The Bills will move forward with Gaines in an interior lineup that includes Ed Oliver, Zane Durant, and Phidarian Mathis. Buffalo will take on Cleveland on Saturday, which will present Gaines with his first opportunity to play for the team in lead up to next season.

Bills Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2026 NFL season.
