Bishop McCort Catholic High School girls wrestling coach Kaura Coles pinned Venezuela’s Alexa Janniriel Alvarez Valenzuela in 2:59 to earn the United World Wrestling U20 freestyle gold medal Wednesday at 53 kilograms in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Canada’s Coles beat the United States’ Taylor Whiting in a 3:45 fall and India’s Muskan Muskan 9-7 in her first two bouts. In a semifinal matchup, Coles topped China’s Yuxuan Li 14-7.
Coles became Canada’s first world champion in 2024 at the Under-17 level. She earned gold at the 2024 Pan-American Championships as a 53-kilogram wrestler.
