Wyndham Clark avoided a brutal collapse on Sunday afternoon, and is now $3.6 million richer.
Clark, after nearly blowing a five-shot lead at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, held on and fended off a push from Rory McIlroy to claim the BMW Championship on Sunday. Clark posted an even par 70 in his final round to get to 17-under on the week.
Clark has now won three times on Tour this season, and he’ll jump up to No. 3 in the FedExCup standings. The win earned Clark $3.6 million, part of a $20 million purse.
Though he opened the final round with a five-shot advantage, that quickly disappeared after Clark opened his day with a bogey and opened the door for McIlroy and others to make a move. While McIlroy moved even with Clark briefly down the stretch, Clark sank three straight deep birdie putts to separate once more and put the tournament away. Those were the only birdies he made all day.
The top 30 in the FedExCup standings will now advance to the Tour Championship next week in Atlanta. That tournament at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta comes with a $40 million purse, and the winner will take home $10 million along with the FedExCup trophy.
