Boot Camp: Eureka returns 16 starters from young 2025 lineup

EUREKA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) -- The Eureka Hornets hope they don't have to repeat what happened in 2025.

The team was hit with injuries that pushed young players into starting positions. The result -- a 3-6 season that saw Eureka miss the playoffs for the first time in nine years.

The silver lining? Those sophomores who played heavy minutes last year are now part of an important junior class and the Hornets feel like they grew through last season's adversity.

"They have another year under their belt now. They were sophomores playing with these big varsity guys," said senior linebacker Fisher Gladson. "That just prepares them more for this year. Imagine what they'll do next year."

Gladson and Logan Wettstein are veteran linebackers looking to lead the defense that includes defensive lineman Brock Leman and defensive back Owen Cahill, both returning starters.

Offensively, the Hornets hope they can move the football through the air more than they did last year. Senior quarterback Lincoln Knapp has worked on his passing game this summer, according to coach Jason Bachman.

"I started last year as a junior. I'd say my leadership got better as I got older," said Knapp. "There's confidence in my game as I work on my craft. It's gotten better.

Knapp has weapons in returning receiver Chris Bunting and running back Finn Hoffman.

Eureka opens the season at home against Tremont on Aug. 21.
