Addison Wells, a talented freshman setter for the Brandeis Broncos, has made a significant impact in her inaugural season, earning the title of Express-News Athlete of the Week. Her recent performances have been instrumental in Brandeis's success, particularly during the Smithson Valley Texas Showdown, where the team achieved an impressive 8-1 record.
During the past week, Wells showcased her skills across ten matches, including a notable four-set victory against Pieper in a non-district matchup. Over these games, she accumulated a remarkable 271 assists, averaging 10.8 assists per set. This level of play has not only contributed to her team's success but has also earned her all-tournament honors for the third consecutive weekend in her varsity career. Previously, she received similar accolades at both the Katy/Cy-Fair tournament and the Fraulein Volleyfest.
Wells's outstanding performance in the weekly poll led her to surpass four other finalists for the Athlete of the Week title, including fellow setter Haley Reno from Alamo Heights. Reno also had an impressive week, setting a school record with 61 assists in a five-set victory against MacArthur. She was subsequently named MVP at the Pearsall Lady Maverick tournament, where she recorded a total of 108 assists, along with 18 digs and 10 aces.
In addition to Wells's recognition, the San Antonio high school sports scene saw other standout performances. Holmes senior quarterback Jayden Hopkins was acknowledged for his versatility, contributing 24 points in a 28-21 road win over Laredo Martin. He amassed 384 total yards, which included 330 rushing yards and 54 passing yards, while also recording four total touchdowns, two tackles, and three punts for 91 yards.
Defensive excellence was highlighted by Steele junior linebacker Pike Kempe, who played a crucial role in his team's 52-21 victory over Reagan. Kempe's performance included 16 total tackles, with four being solo, along with 2½ tackles for loss, a sack, two quarterback hurries, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery, earning him the title of defensive player of the week.
In a notable debut for the Brandeis Broncos, senior receiver and cornerback Hakim Frampton made an immediate impact after transferring from Robinson in Little Rock, Arkansas. In a thrilling 35-28 rivalry win against O'Connor, Frampton caught a touchdown pass and intercepted two passes, returning them for a combined 84 yards.
