The Atlanta Braves have been struggling as of late, losing four of their last five games and giving up ground in the NL East standings. The Braves were once considered one of the best teams in baseball this season, but they have cooled off considerably.
With Atlanta struggling, the biggest issue has been the offense rather than the pitching. The Braves suffered a 4-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night, continuing their recent struggles at the plate.
“Attention has largely centered on the Braves’ rotation since the trade deadline, but the offense has sputtered – and it cost them another victory Tuesday. The Braves lost 4-1 to the Twins, resulting in their first-ever series loss at Target Field (9-4 overall). They’ll try to avoid a sweep Wednesday after managing just three runs over the first 18 innings of the series,” AJC’s Gabriel Burns wrote.
The Braves have also been making moves throughout their minor league organization. On Sunday, Atlanta released veteran first baseman Carlos Santana, allowing him to pursue an opportunity elsewhere.
“Veteran first baseman Carlos Santana will be granted his release from Triple-A Gwinnett today and will be a free agent, sources tell ESPN. He's still looking to play and hopes to latch on with a team after hitting .292/.385/.382 with a pair of home runs in 104 plate appearances,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote.
Atlanta made another minor league move Tuesday, signing former Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Chuckie Robinson to a contract.
“The Braves signed depth catcher Chuckie Robinson to a minor league contract. He’s in the lineup tonight with Triple-A Gwinnett. Robinson finds a new home around a week after being released by the Dodgers. (His release from Los Angeles was coincidentally spurred by them signing frequent Atlanta depth catcher Chadwick Tromp to a minor league deal.),” MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco wrote.
Adding catching depth after losing Chadwick Tromp was a necessary move for Atlanta, and Robinson provides the organization with another experienced option. He has spent the past two seasons in the Dodgers organization and gives the Braves valuable depth behind Sean Murphy and Drake Baldwin.
Robinson made his MLB debut four years ago, and joining the Braves makes Atlanta his fifth organization. After appearing in games for the Dodgers over the past two seasons, Robinson has been part of two World Series-winning teams. Now, Atlanta will give him an opportunity to prove he can contribute if the need arises.
