In a commanding display of skill and teamwork, Brighton football triumphed over Wayne Memorial with a staggering score of 59-0 in their home opener. The game, held on Thursday night, marked a significant moment for Brighton, who demonstrated their dominance from the outset.
Leading 59-0 at halftime, Brighton's performance was characterized by a series of impressive plays and strategic execution. Senior defensive back Rhys Mollon made a notable contribution to the scoreline, scooping up a loose ball and sprinting four yards for a touchdown just before the half concluded. Reflecting on the moment, Mollon shared, "I saw my teammate up in front, I thought if he didn’t get it, that I was going to get it and score. It feels great, I mean having all the boys out there with me, it meant everything. We have to stay classy no matter what." His focus on maintaining composure and adhering to Brighton's standards was evident throughout the game.
Brighton’s head coach, Brian Lemons, praised his team's ability to maintain focus and build on their success play after play. "The experience is that our guys get on the field and take the success from play to play and pass it off to their teammates. If we are going to get better as a team, we have to be better from the very best kid to the very last kid on the roster," Lemons said. This philosophy was clearly evident as Brighton executed their game plan effectively.
The scoring began early in the first quarter when Dom Nauss broke through for a 29-yard touchdown run with 7:09 remaining. Following a turnover on downs by Wayne Memorial, Brighton quickly capitalized on the opportunity. Nauss struck again, this time with a 31-yard touchdown run, extending Brighton's lead to 14-0 with just under five minutes left in the first quarter. The first quarter concluded with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Dom D’Agnosta to Jamo Parsell, bringing the score to 21-0.
The second quarter saw Brighton continue their offensive onslaught, adding another 38 points. Jake Schweizer contributed significantly with touchdown runs of 25, 14, and 8 yards. Additionally, Weston Buckley added a 29-yard field goal, while defensive scores from Mollon and Isaac Gardner, who recorded a pick-six, showcased Brighton's all-around prowess on the field.
After two consecutive strong performances, including a previous victory against Dexter, Coach Lemons expressed optimism about his team's progress. He noted, "There is a balance in the offense that makes it really hard to defend, and our kids are doing a good job of executing. Next week things amp up really fast against Northville, so I think that next week we will find out where we are." This upcoming matchup against Northville is particularly significant as it marks the last KLAA showdown between the two schools before Northville transitions to the Oakland Activities Association in 2027.
In other local action, Howell secured a 41-31 victory over Belleville, reinforcing their strong start to the season, while Hartland defeated Westland John Glenn 57-6, and Fowlerville bounced back with a 32-13 win against Corunna.
