Brisyn Brown is rising to the occasion as he takes on the role of quarterback for the Florida High Seminoles. The sophomore has stepped in following the injury of junior starter Jayme "Football" Miller, who had been making waves as the team's signal caller before his setback.
Brown’s transition from running back to quarterback has been a significant adjustment, but he has embraced the challenge. "It’s been pretty good," Brown shared with the Tallahassee Democrat. "I’ve got a very good coaching staff. And to be able to lean on my receivers and offensive line, it just makes it so much easier with that transition." This confidence has served him well as he leads the Seminoles in the early stages of the high school football season.
In his first two games under center, Brown has showcased his skills, completing 17 of 23 passes for 276 yards. He has thrown two touchdown passes while only tossing one interception. His performance has been critical to the Seminoles' success, particularly in their recent matchup against the Lawton-Chiles High School Timberwolves, where Florida High secured a 24-14 victory despite facing four turnovers in the first half.
Brown's ability to adapt quickly has been noted by head coach Jarrod Hickman, who acknowledged the learning curve that comes with such a significant position change. "Brisyn, asking him what he’s trying to do with limited time in the spring and summer, he’s doing a good job," Hickman remarked. "He’s bound to make a mistake here and there." Indeed, Brown did encounter challenges, including a pick-six thrown to Chiles’ cornerback Nolan Williams, but he rebounded effectively, finishing the game with 200 passing yards and two touchdowns.
One of the assets that has aided Brown in his transition is his background as a running back. At 6 feet tall and weighing 200 pounds, his dual-threat capability allows him to keep defenses guessing. "Being a dual-threat quarterback helps out a lot," Brown explained. "It also takes pressure off the receivers, too, because the majority of the time, defenses try to stack the box. It leaves them open, and one-on-one, we’re always taking it." This versatility is crucial for the Seminoles as they aim to maintain their winning momentum.
Brown's chemistry with his wide receivers is also evident, particularly with four-star junior Ar’Tavian "Bubba" Brown, who transferred from Lowndes High School in Valdosta. The rapport between the two players is built on trust, as Bubba Brown noted, "For him to step up, deal with all the criticism, and still come to play, and then trusting me, knowing he has a ballplayer — it shows the work ethic and faith in God is going to show up." This mutual support is vital as they navigate the season together.
As the Seminoles prepare for their next challenge, they will face the South Walton Seahawks, who also boast an undefeated record of 2-0. This matchup is set for Friday, September 4, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time in Santa Rosa Beach. The last encounter between Florida High and South Walton resulted in a 34-14 victory for the Seminoles, setting the stage for an exciting rematch. With both teams looking to extend their winning streaks, all eyes will be on Brown as he continues to lead Florida High from the quarterback position.
