The Denver Broncos set their initial 53-man roster on Sunday after cutting 34 players, placing three players on injury lists and losing one player to the commissioner's exempt list.

First, the injuries: offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo was moved from the active/physically unable to perform list to the reserve/PUP list, and tight end Caleb Lohner and offensive tackle Frank Crum were placed on short-term injured reserve. All three players will be eligible to return after four games, but they might not all be ready that quickly.

“He’s looked good," general manager George Paton said when asked about Lohner. "He was having a really good offseason and obviously had a setback with the foot. We expect him, I’m not sure the timetable, mid-season maybe. Don’t hold me to that. ... We won’t see him until late October or so.”

Elsewhere on the transaction front, outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper was placed on the commissioner's exempt list. Cooper is not suspended, but he can't practice or play in games. The pass rusher is expected to plead not guilty to all five charges related to his felony assault case on Monday.

And one more injury-related note from Sunday's outs: outside linebacker Drew Sanders was designated as waived/injured. If he clears waivers, Sanders will revert to season-ending IR. Alternatively, he could reach an injury settlement with the team to be released from IR.
