Brothers of Climbing is making rock climbing more inclusive

Rock climbing has long been seen as a sport built around adventure, strength, and exploration, but for many people it has not always felt like an accessible space. When one climber entered the world of climbing events, he quickly noticed something missing: representation. Among the many athletes and participants around him, he was often the only person of colour in the room.

Curious about where other Black climbers were, he searched online for communities and stories that reflected his own experience. Instead of finding encouragement, he discovered discussions claiming that Black people did not participate in climbing. Rather than accepting that idea, he decided to challenge it and prove that outdoor adventure belonged to everyone.

Growing up, he was told that activities like spending time in nature or exploring the outdoors were not common within the Black community. In cities like New York, young people often had more familiar sports options such as basketball, football, and baseball. He wanted to introduce another possibility, one that allowed people to connect with nature while building confidence and physical skills.

This vision led to the creation of Brothers of Climbing, an organisation focused on increasing diversity and encouraging underrepresented groups to participate in rock climbing. The community was created for anyone who felt overlooked in the sport, including men, women, and climbers from different backgrounds.

What started with only three people gradually grew into a larger movement. The organisation now hosts regular gatherings in New York City and aims to create climbing festivals and events in other locations. These meetups provide a place where new climbers can learn, connect, and feel represented.

One of the biggest challenges facing diversity in climbing is the lack of mentors and visible role models. Many people who are interested in the sport may not have someone in their community to introduce them to climbing or teach them the basics. Without that support, entering the sport can feel intimidating.

The climbing industry has also faced criticism for not showing enough diversity in its marketing and media. When people rarely see themselves represented in a sport, they may assume it is not meant for them. Creating more visibility can help change that perception.

For new climbers, the biggest breakthrough often comes from simply trying. Once people experience climbing for themselves, they begin to realise their own potential. The feeling of reaching a new height, completing a difficult route, or overcoming fear can create a powerful sense of achievement.

Through Brothers of Climbing, the goal is not only to bring more people into the sport but also to change the idea of who belongs outdoors. Rock climbing is a challenge, but it is also a community where anyone can discover strength, confidence, and a new connection with the world around them.
