As the Cleveland Browns prepare for the 2026-27 NFL regular season, the organization has made significant moves to bolster its defensive lineup. General Manager Andrew Berry has finalized a 53-man roster following a busy offseason that included a mix of roster cuts and strategic additions aimed at enhancing team depth.
During the recent roster cutdown period, several standout players from the preseason, including local favorite Luke Floriea, were released. Despite these tough decisions, the Browns were proactive in adding several defensive players to the mix, emphasizing the need for improved depth as they head into the competitive season.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Browns' Assistant General Manager and Vice President of Football Operations Catherine Hickman elaborated on the team’s strategy in acquiring new talent. She noted that the focus was on finding players who could provide the defense with more "flexibility" and experience. Hickman stated, “I’d view them as opportunities to get the roster better, and I think that’s what we try to do at cutdown. There are many avenues to player acquisition, whether that’s claiming a guy like [Mekhi] Blackmon, or adding Noah [Igbinoghene] and Tori [Toriano Pride Jr.]. Those are just players that come in and give us flexibility, give us some veteran presence as well, experience. That’s just more help for our defense, and it gives flexibility and options to our coaching staff.”
One of the primary areas of concern for the Browns was the cornerback position, which required immediate attention after the preseason concluded. While the team secured a contract extension for star cornerback Denzel Ward earlier in the offseason, the overall depth at the position remained a pressing issue. This prompted the front office to bring in several defensive backs last week, including Mekhi Blackmon, Toriano Pride Jr., and Noah Igbinoghene.
Noah Igbinoghene stands out among the recent signings, as he was a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. Over his six-year career, the 26-year-old has transitioned through several teams, including the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Commanders, where he played his last two seasons. In 69 games, Igbinoghene has recorded 119 tackles, 17 pass deflections, and one interception, making him a valuable addition to the Browns' secondary.
Alongside Igbinoghene, the Browns also acquired Toriano Pride Jr., a seventh-round draft pick from the Buffalo Bills, and Mekhi Blackmon, a 27-year-old cornerback with two years of NFL experience. These additions are expected to enhance the defensive lineup and provide the coaching staff with more options as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming season.
With the NFL season fast approaching, the Cleveland Browns are banking on these new additions to strengthen their defensive capabilities and improve their chances of success in the highly competitive league.
