Browns coach Todd Monken clarified whether Deshaun Watson's comments would impact QB battle

Browns head coach Todd Monken has a decision to make in the coming days between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders as his Week 1 quarterback. And Watson's own comments about Cleveland's fans weren't exactly helpful in the QB battle.

But if Monken is to be believed, Watson's remarks won't impact his final decision.

In Saturday's preseason loss to the Bills, Watson was booed heavily by his home fans, and he called the reception disrespectful and personal. Watson has been atrocious since joining the Browns on a fully guaranteed contract in 2022 amid sexual misconduct allegations. He missed all of last season with a torn Achilles suffered in 2024, so Saturday was his first game back in front of the Cleveland crowd.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Monken praised Watson's work ethic this preseason and understood why he would be frustrated about getting booed at home.

#Browns HC Todd Monken says Deshaun Watson’s postgame remarks about the fans won’t affect his final decision. Monken says Watson was simply emptying his heart.

Watson was just 5 of 12 passing for 36 yards and an interception in the loss.
