The Cleveland Browns put starting defensive end Alex Wright on season-ending injured reserve with a ruptured Achilles, and signed free-agent defensive end Derek Barnett.
Wright has played in 51 games over the past four seasons for the Browns. He had a career-best 5.5 sacks over 14 games last seasons.
Wright, a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, was injured during a one-on-one drill with a Buffalo Bills offensive lineman during their joint practice Aug. 20.
Wright had a sack and two tackles for loss in the Browns' 31-14 loss to the Bengals in Jan. 2024.
Barnett, a first-round pick in 2017, has played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans.
In June, the Browns traded star defensive end Myles Garrett, a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, to the Los Angeles Rams for linebacker Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round draft pick, a 2028 second-round pick and a 2029 third-round pick.
