Browns’ Shedeur Sanders trade sends him to contender to back up future Hall of Famer originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Cleveland Browns quarterback competition is up in the air at the moment between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders, though reports have indicated that Watson might be the favorite.
If that's truly the case, the Browns could do Sanders a favor by moving him to a different team. Ultimately, the young man has to figure out what his future looks like in the NFL and whether he even has a chance to play anytime in the near future.
There are some interesting trades that could be made involving Sanders and teams that need a backup quarterback, including the Detroit Lions after Teddy Bridgewater announced his retirement. One trade proposal with the Browns and Lions would do just that, sending Sanders to Detroit.
Detroit Lions Receive: QB Shedeur Sanders
Cleveland Browns Receive: 2027 sixth-round pick
“Shedeur Sanders is technically still up for the starting job in Cleveland. If anything, he should be the clear leader in the clubhouse; every day of Browns training camp brings a new interception from Deshaun Watson, it seems. That said, Watson's contract is a huge factor, and the Browns are going to have a hard time benching him outright because of it. Even if it's the objective "right" choice,” Christopher Kline wrote.
It almost feels very unlikely that the Browns would move on from Sanders at the moment, depending on what the organization actually thinks.
The problem here is that the Browns are in the middle of a quarterback competition, so unless they announce a QB1 in the future and Watson wins the job, it's very unlikely that Sanders would be dealt.
