It's been a wild ride for Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson this offseason. The Cleveland Browns are deciding which quarterback will start for their season, and all eyes are on this decision.
Sanders is entering his second season in the NFL. Watson is a veteran who's been out of commission due to injury for way too long. Both players have talent and their own positives. One player will get the start.
For the Browns, the preseason was a big deal. While some teams are only looking at preseason games to help figure out their backups, the Browns used it to determine their starting quarterback. That's huge. Now, CBS Sports has named Sanders one of the biggest winners of the preseason, which is a big win for him.
Shedeur Sanders makes his case for the starting jobNFL experts Garrett Podell and Zachary Pereles throw some shade at Watson in this list. It's a bit mean, so hopefully Watson doesn't take it to heart too much. It's only their opinion, but it's a strong one.
"Was Shedeur Sanders perfect in his preseason Week 2 start? Hardly," they note of the Browns-Bills game. "Was he much, much better than Deshaun Watson? Absolutely. (Though the bar was basically on the ground)." That's a rub.
CBS Sports highlights how Sanders came out on his first drive after the weather delay, and it was impressive, "connecting on all four of his passes on the opening drive."
"That included a fourth-down conversion to tight end Blake Whiteheart and, later on, an 8-yard touchdown pass to Luke Floriea," they add.
Plus, Sanders was mainly tossing to backups on the field, aside from starting rookies Spencer Fano and Denzel Boston. So, he didn't have much to work with but delivered. The Bills didn't have their starters out, though, so the competition will get way tougher when the season starts.
Sanders generally had a stellar game against the Bills, notching 9-for-11, 74 yards, one touchdown, one interception and one sack.
